Zangskar Project
Gaden Relief has been funding nunneries in Zangskar since 1991.
What began at one nunnery, Chuchikjall*,
expanded to include all of the nunneries in the region.
Dr. Kim Gutschow, formerly of Harvard University and now Visiting
Assistant Professor of Religion at Williams College in Williamstown,
Massachusetts, has visited Chuchikjall and area nunneries each
year, delivering aid provided by Gaden Relief. Gaden Relief has
provided thousands of dollars of aid to the nuns. This money has
been used to purchase food, woodstoves, clothing, medicine, religious
books, and even to build a greenhouse to grow vegetables in. Most
of the money is spent in the area helping to boost the impoverished
local economy.
Through
sponsorships and donations, supporters in Canada, United States,
Europe and Australia provide a lifeline to dozens of nuns who
have very little other means of support. You can help by making
a one time donation to the nuns or by becoming a sponsor of a
nun. As a sponsor you will receive the name and photo of the nun
you are supporting.
* The name of the nunnery is
also rendered from Tibetan as 'Chuchizhal' which is the spelling
Dr. Gutschow uses in her articles and reports. 'Zangskar'
is often rendered as 'Zanskar', an older rendering still in common
use.
